For our weekend trip to Alicante in March, I looked for how we could make the most of our time by incorporating some day trips. On Saturday, we balanced our time between seeing the city of Alicante as well as taking a day-trip to Villajoyosa. Looking for something to do on Sunday, I came across Tabarca Island. Read below to find out why you too should make a day trip to Tabarca Island if you are in Alicante.

How to Get to Tabarca Island
Saturday night we walked to the Alicante port and inquired into boats leaving for Tabarca the next day. We found one boat operated by Kon Tiki Cruceros departing at 10 am the next morning. It cost 20 EUR round trip per person returning at 4:30 pm the same day. The trip each way takes about 50 minutes. The timing was tight, but we decided to take the chance and make the most of the day.
The island of Tabarca
The island town of Tabarca is tiny. There are 50 permanent inhabitants, making it the smallest inhabited island in Spain. During the summer, it reaches up to 500 inhabitants, taking advantage of the favorable Spanish summer weather. The town is tiny – we walked the ‘center’ at least 3 times– and there are only a handful of restaurants. We did a quick look-up in Google Maps and went to Restaurante Casa Gloria for lunch. We feasted on fideuà, which is similar to paella, but instead of rice it has noodles.
On Tabarca, there is a small rock beach, which we walked down to and rested on for some time. We didn’t swim that day, as it was too cold, but in the summer months we would. All in all, Tabarca makes for a really nice short day-trip if you are already in Alicante. I’ll leave you with some more photos as well as a short video of our entire weekend in Alicante, Villajoyosa and on Tabarca Island.
