JC and I spent this past Christmas and New Year’s in Peru. We used the opportunity to meet with our wedding planners and see venues for our Peru wedding next year. I also arranged for us to take our engagement photos with our wedding photographer and videographer while we were there. For us, a destination engagement photoshoot was the perfect idea. Not only because we are having a destination wedding, but also because we love to travel. Read below why you should consider a destination engagement photoshoot and how to plan one.
A destination engagement photoshoot is a perfect excuse to travel
A destination engagement photoshoot is a great excuse to travel to a new place. Whether you are having a destination wedding or not, a photoshoot before the big day is a great opportunity to go somewhere new with your partner. And learning how to travel well with your soon-to-be spouse is an important skill you should start perfecting now.
Use your destination engagement photoshoot as a ‘test run’ for the actual wedding
Having our destination engagement photoshoot in Peru was perfect. We got to know our photographer and videographer before the big day. Plus, the photoshoot was like a ‘test run’ for the actual wedding. We were able to practice being on camera together which will make it that much easier for the wedding. Our photographer & videographer also included an engagement photo and video shoot in the wedding package, so even better!
A destination engagement photoshoot is all about location — consider it carefully
I really didn’t want the typical engagement shoot in Lima, which is usually in the neighborhoods of Miraflores or Barranco. Instead of a cityscape, I was more drawn to a desert climate. I immediately thought of la Reserva Nacional de Paracas, where we had visited just the year before. Sand dunes, rocky coastline, beach, it has it all. Really put some thought into your location (as well as your photographer). It makes all the difference in the finished product.
Practice makes perfect — especially before your big day!
An engagement photoshoot is a great opportunity for you and your partner to practice being in front of the camera. Some couples are a bit stiff and need time to loosen up. Remember, the best photos are the ones in which you look like you are having fun together! Relax and enjoy the moment!
Choose the timing of your photoshoot carefully for the best light
See below for some of our favorite photos from the shoot as well as video! We had two sessions to get the best light. The beach shoot was in the morning around 7 am. The desert shoot was in the early evening around 4 pm. This allowed us to shoot in two different locations with the most flattering light.
