How to Stay Cool in Berlin this Summer | Pools, Beaches & Ice Cream

Last Updated on September 15, 2020

Summer in Berlin is HOT — especially August. While the ideal scenario would be to leave the city and hit the beach, with COVID and a newborn baby, this unfortunately is not the reality for us. So instead, we have had to look for ways to stay cool in the city. It IS possible if you know where to go. See below our top spots to cool off when the weather heats up during the summer in Berlin.

Hit the ‘fake’ Beach (or Pool) to stay cool in Berlin this summer

Badeschiff – Badeschiff is a manmade beach with a pool floating on the urban spree, all nestled between some industrial buildings in true Berlin style. During COVID-19 you need to buy admission tickets here as they are limiting the number of people allowed entrance. Tickets cost 6.50 EUR. If you have Urban Sports Club you can also use your membership for access to the pool. M Members can enter 4 x a month. You can book 4 days in advance of your planned entry and time slots are 2 hours long. You cannot bring your own food and drinks, but you can buy them there (and pay with card!). It definitely has a hipper and more posh vibe than some of the more family-geared pools in Berlin. Swimming in the pool is also done on rotation during COVID.

Sommerbad Humboldthain – Located in the Humboldthain park in Wedding. Sommerbad Humboldthain offers visitors a park shaded by trees as well as a large pool for swimming. The pool is divided with swimming lanes for those wanting to do laps. It also has as a shallow area for children. They are also limiting entrance during COVID-19 — you can buy entrance tickets in advance here. While Badeshiff has a cooler vibe, Sommerbad Humboldthain is really geared toward families with small children. Entrance costs 3.73 EUR while small children enter for free.

Grab an Ice Cream to cool off

Hokey Pokey – Besides hitting the beach or a pool, one of the best ways to stay cool is with an ice cream. Hokey Pokey is by far the BEST ice cream shop in Berlin. The signature Hokey Pokey flavor with caramal pieces is our favorite.

Tenzan Lab – A newer discovery, Tenzan Lab serves exclusively Japanese desserts in the neighborhood of Prenzlauer Berg. Their specialty, Kaikagori, which is like flavored shaved ice, is so refreshing on a hot summer day.
