How to ‘Travel’ During Coronavirus | Without Leaving Your Home

Last Updated on April 5, 2021

Admittedly, JC and I have been suffering from some serious withdrawal due to not being able to travel the majority of last year. So far, 2021 has not been too different. We are in the midst of a third wave in Europe. Even travel within our own country of Germany is not possible, as all hotels and Airbnb’s are closed to tourism. With travel off the table, we’ve had to get creative on weekends with activities besides Netflix. That’s where Airbnb Online Experiences came in. We are all too familiar with Airbnb and also with Airbnb Experiences while traveling. But before coronavirus became the new normal, we had never taken an Airbnb Online Experience. This of course has all changed in the last months. We are now Airbnb Online Experience addicts, having taken six classes since December. Read below on how you too can use Airbnb Online Experiences to travel the world during coronavirus without leaving your home.

Travel the world safely during coronavirus with just your laptop

Traveling is exciting. Going to a new country or city, hearing a different language, eating different foods, seeing new sites. While it is impossible to recreate all of the thrills of traveling via a laptop screen, Airbnb Online Experiences is the next best alternative. With Airbnb Online Experiences, we have traveled to Peru and eaten the best ceviche. We have learned how to tango in Argentina. We have even have gone as far as India to make the most delicious home cooked meal that you cannot find in restaurants. We’ve made our own kimchi that we can enjoy for the next three years (that is how long kimchi can stay in your fridge!). And we’ve even learned how to cook our own salsa from a pro in Mexico City. More than just the food or the dance steps, it is the human interaction, that makes these experiences so beneficial and also necessary during these periods of isolation. Find below details on some of the ‘trips’ we have taken all over the world in these last few months. We hope that this will inspire you to also find new ways to ‘travel’ during these challenging times.

If you dream of traveling to Mexico and eating handmade tacos

If your dream in these last months has been to travel to Mexico and feast on delicious handmade tacos, then this experience is for you. In 1 1/2 hours we learned how to make our own handmade flour tortillas, salsa and (vegetarian for me) filling. Our host Lorena was warm, engaging and patient with all of us. She shared the ingredients with us ahead of time as well as a Spotify Playlist featuring music from Mexican artists. We were joined in the class by families located all over the world. As we ate our tacos, Lorena showed us the view of Mexico City as seen from outside her window. After taking the class, we are now making our own tacos, including handmade tortillas, weekly on ‘Taco Tuesday.’

If Peru is at the top of your bucket list but you’ve had to delay travel due to coronavirus

We are a bit biased, since JC is from Peru, but Peruvian is one of our favorite cuisines. However, it is really difficult to find a great Peruvian restaurant outside of Peru. Even more difficult to find a great ceviche. We were skeptical upon booking our class to cook the best ceviche with Chef Melissa located in Lima, Peru. We didn’t know how we could possibly make ceviche without fresh fish. However, with Melissa’s help we were somehow able to transform frozen store-bought white fish into the most delicious ceviche we’ve eaten outside of Peru.

If you and your partner want to travel to the birthplace of tango

One of our New Year’s resolutions is to learn how to dance before our wedding in Peru. With that in mind, we decided to book a tango lesson with experts located in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Luciana and Gustavo were excellent teachers, even with us total beginners. By the end of the class we definitely felt more confident. And after a bottle of Argentinian Malbec wine our dancing significantly improved!

If you are craving a taste of India but travel plans are still ages away

JC and I LOVE Indian food. India is at the top of our bucket list once the world resumes to normal. Besides seeing the Taj Mahal, eating local food is one of our musts for a future trip to India. Until we can make this dream a reality, we decided to book an online cooking class with locals in India. With our host, Chhotaram, who lives in a small village outside of Jaipur, we made an eggplant dish, rayati (a yogurt based dish with onions) and chapati bread. These recipes are passed down generation to generation in his family(over 500 years!) and are not something you’d find in Indian restaurants. It was great to try something new and unique (and delicious!). We ate the eggplant and rayati with the chapati bread instead of with utensils, just as they do in India. We have even recreated the dishes since the class and they were just as delicious! The food was so delicious, we booked a second class with Chhotaram, as he changes his menu every 10 days.
