With a brand new baby and in the midst of a global pandemic, we have definitely been spending more time in our own backyard as opposed to traveling to new cities and countries. That means finding simpler ways to enjoy ourselves and get out of the house — usually in the form of eating out. We moved to the neighborhood of Prenzlauer Berg in February of this year and we absolutely love having so many great places to eat out just down the street. And all are baby and stroller friendly. Find below a non-exhaustive list of the best restaurants and places to eat in Berlin Prenzlauer Berg, in no particular order (except for Sasaya rightfully in the #1 spot).
For the best Sushi in Prenzlauer Berg try one of these favorites
Sasaya – Our favorite restaurant since moving to Berlin. And now only 5 minutes walking down the street from our new apartment. Traditional Japanese food, it even has floor seating (there are tables with chairs too). Incredibly popular, you need a reservation to eat here, even on a Monday (they are closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays). However, if you want to eat with your baby you need to get there at 6 pm (or a few minutes early) to grab one of their outside tables without reservation. They do not allow children under 6 years old inside. Our favorites to order are the ‘No Name’ roll, the sashimi, the heavenly vanilla ice cream with green tea sauce and the Yokahama Ponchi vanilla ice cream.
Enzo – A newer discovery, this is our second favorite sushi restaurant in Berlin after Sasaya (did I mention we love sushi?). The edamame with sesame seeds is amazing. But real the standout is the Ebi Tempura roll with Salmon and truffle mayonnaise. IN-CRE-DI-BLE. Plus, they give you a beautiful brush to lightly apply your soy sauce to your maki, which is an elegant touch.
For the best Brunch in Prenzlauer Berg these are our absolute MUSTS
44 Brekkie – THE MOST AMAZING BREAKFAST SANDWICHES. 44 Brekkie has ‘egg drops’ which are breakfast sandwiches in the most delicious brioche bread with scrambled egg, cheese, secret sauce and options to add salmon, avocado and/or garlic. Our favorite is the avocado and double cheese with garlic. They also do takeaway, in case you don’t have the patience to wait in line.
ABC – Allans Breakfast Club – The best brunch spot we’d found in Berlin until we found 44 Brekkie. They are actually located across the street from one another. You can only make reservations via facebook, otherwise you need to wait in line for a table. JC loves the Eggs Benny with pulled pork.
If you are craving something more international try one of these restaurants
Kanaan – An Israeli – Palestinian restaurant. Go here for the BEST hummus you have maybe ever had — even if you’ve gone to Israel. At dinner time you pay 20 EUR and you get an entire table filled with small ‘mezze’ appetizers to share. Then you can choose your main dish from a selection of three options (two of which are hummus).
Takumi NINE – If you are craving something warm on a cold day, there is nothing better than a big hot bowl of ramen. Takumi NINE is by far the best and most authentic ramen we have tried in Berlin and Prenzlauerberg. They are open for lunch and dinner, but beware, there is usually a big queue. They have vegan options and my favorite is the vegan tan tan with gemüse (veggie) tempura.
Wen Cheng Handpulled Noodles – We are absolutely addicted to Wen Cheng’s since it opened, and make a habit to go here once a week for takeaway. The people are so devoted to these noodles, that they queue for 30 minutes plus outside in the freezing winter cold, and will even opt to eat outside rather than miss out on these delicious noodles. We always order the Biang Biang noodles, me with tofu and JC with beef. You can order with different levels of spice, but beware the ‘asian spicy’ level is insane!
D.O. – D.O. is a delicious Catalan restaurant we visited for the first time the other week. Highlights are the arroz negro (black rice with prawns) and the gambas (prawns). Easily the best Catalan food I’ve had (in or out of Barcelona).
KOKIO – KOKIO serves Korean fried chicken, chicken wings and fried tofu (perfect for a vegetarian like me). You choose your sauce — we went with sweet chili– and your fries (regular or sweet potato). This place is really delicious and great because JC can get his wing fix while I enjoy my tofu.
If you are looking for the best Italian in Berlin, look no further than Il Mattarello
Il Mattarello – If you are looking for the best Italian in Berlin, look no further than Il Mattarello. Super authentic, you feel like you are in Italy while eating there. The only menu is on a chalkboard outside, so be sure to take a photo on your phone before sitting down. Reservations are highly recommended. The place is tiny, so during the winter months, a table is hard to come by. Come spring, there are many more seating options outside. If they have it on the menu, be sure to order the ‘spaghetti neri’ in squid ink sauce. The salads with burrata or mozzarella are also delicious, as is the tiramisu for dessert.
Or if you have a major sweet tooth give one of these spots a try
5 Elephant – This new Prenzlauer Berg outpost of 5 Elephant just opened last week. It’s not even on Google Maps yet, but it is located on Kollwitzstraße. Go here for the most amazing cheesecake of your life. 5 Elephant has two other locations, one in Mitte and one in Kreuzberg.
Hokey Pokey – The BEST ice cream, definitely in Berlin, and a strong competitor with the best gelaterias I have visited in Italy. My favorite flavor is the namesake ‘Hokey Pokey,’ JC also loves the ‘Passionfrucht.’ At 1.70 EUR per scoop, it’s the best money you’ve ever spent and a great way to cool off.

Tenzan Lab – A recent discovery, Tenzan Lab serves only Japanese dessert. The highlight is definitely the Kakigori, which is like a towering shaved ice with condensed milk (or whichever your topping preference) poured over it and finished with red beans on top. One of the best places to eat in Berlin in the summer. Not to be missed!
Brammibal’s Donuts – I’ve never been a huge donut person and neither is JC, but after trying these donuts we were immediately converted. You can spot the conspicuous and iconic Brammibal’s pink box in the hands of donut fans all throughout the city (they have multiple locations). My favorite is by far the Boston Creme (it is better than any Boston Creme donut I’ve had in Boston, where I am from). Coated in chocolate with the most delicious creme filling, it is literally heaven in a donut. JC’s favorite is Salted Caramel Hazelnut. Just be sure to eat them all the same day you buy them! They are best when fresh.
