Train to Sóller | Best Things to Do in Mallorca

Last Updated on October 1, 2020

The best way to get around Mallorca is probably with a car. However, I had yet to order my International Driver’s license from the United States. And JC’s time in Europe being able to drive with his Peruvian license had sadly come to an end. So we were stuck carless on the island. While we were only in Mallorca for a weekend, we still wanted to see a bit more of the island than biking could offer us. That’s when I discovered the 100-year old train to a little town called Sóller. Read below to find out all the details on reaching Sóller by train from Palma on the island of Mallorca.

Getting onboard the 100-year old train from Palma to Sóller

Tickets for the Train from Palma to Sóller

Where to Buy

You buy your tickets to Sóller and depart from the main train station in Palma. You can only purchase tickets the same day as your journey — not in advance. Be sure to check the timetables for both your trip and return trip, as well as the tram to the Port of Sóller. The train only brings you to the town of Sóller. If you want to reach the port you need to then catch the tram. You should buy both the train and tram tickets round-trip all at once. More info can be found here including the timetable.

How much are tickets

Tickets to Sóller are normally 32 EUR round-trip (train + tram). However, when we got in line Sunday morning to buy tickets, we discovered we had lucked out– it was el día del tren and the whole trip was less than half price– a cool 13 EUR round-trip, tram to Port of Sóller included. Now, this ‘Train Day’ is not advertised online, so it really is simply ‘luck of the draw.’ (We went on Sunday, February 17th, in case you want to try the same day).

Riding the 100-year old train from Palma to Sóller

The train offers views of the countryside of Mallorca in relative comfort. There are no assigned seats so it is first come, first served.
However, not all of the train ride comes with a view, as you can see from our video below:

And the ride continues in the tunnel…….

Will we ever see the end of the tunnel? (hint, the answer is YES)

After you take the approximately 1 hour train journey from Palma to Sóller, you can either stick around in the town (which is quite small), or you can grab the tram (the ticket for which you should have already bought) to the Port of Sóller, which I highly recommend. Or, you can do both (like we did).

The Town of Sóller

Upon arriving, we took a scenic stroll through the town of Sóller. There is a small center, as well as narrow streets to wander through.

The tram to the Port of Sóller

After meandering through the town, we hopped on the tram that takes you through the town center of Sóller en route to the Port.

Below, you can see our beautiful view as the tram entered the Port of Sóller.

And our view of other tram-goers passing by as we soaked up the sun.

All in all, it was a beautiful day-trip from Palma, and a great option if you don’t have a car on the island. Extra points if you manage to benefit from the ‘Train Day’ special like we did. I’ll leave you with a few last photos from our time at the Port.

*Quick Tip: In Sóller, like in Palma, make lunch reservations ahead of time! We had a very difficult time finding an open table.
